Buying Guide

Hey Harper taught Portugal that jewellery can survive a shower. The question men keep typing is whether any of it is made for them.

Hey Harper and the men's question

If you searched for Hey Harper men's jewellery and found yourself going in circles, you are not doing it wrong. The brand is one of the most visible jewellery names to come out of Lisbon, it built its reputation on pieces that survive showers, sweat and seawater, and it is the reason a lot of Portuguese shoppers now know the phrase waterproof jewellery at all.

What it does not appear to have, at the time of writing, is a men's collection. This guide answers that plainly, explains what the brand genuinely does well, and then covers where men in Portugal can find the same idea in shapes made for them, including men's cuban chains from our own range.

Disclosure before anything else: we run Monrich, and we appear in the options section further down. Read that part knowing it. Everything said about Hey Harper comes from their own published pages, checked on the day this was written.

Section 01

What Hey Harper got right

macro of a gold finish, the surface a colour warranty is really about

It is worth being fair before being useful. Hey Harper did something genuinely difficult: it made an ordinary shopper care about a technical detail.

Before waterproof jewellery became a category, the standard advice was to take everything off before the shower, the pool and the gym. Hey Harper built its entire promise on the opposite idea, and the phrase that runs across its site says it in five words: shower-safe, sweat-proof, life-ready.

The technical claim behind it is a PVD coating, described on their pages as ten times stronger than standard plating, applied over stainless steel. PVD, physical vapour deposition, is the same family of process used on watch cases: the metal is bonded in a vacuum chamber rather than dipped, which produces a harder and denser layer than ordinary electroplating.

They also publish a Lifetime Color Warranty. The mechanism is simple: if a piece loses its colour, you email support with a clear photo and they deal with it. Few brands in the accessible segment put a colour promise in writing at all, and it deserves credit.

Section 02

So, is there a men's line?

Short answer: not that we could find. Checked on the day of writing, the men's collection URL returns a 404, and a pass through the brand's sitemap turns up no collection or product URL containing men, him or unisex.

The navigation confirms the same picture from the other direction. The categories on offer are jewellery, watches, sweatproof jewellery, a sports capsule, a workwear edit built around dress codes, and seasonal sale pages. The named collections lean the same way, and the catalogue has widened into swimwear, dresses, caps and sunglasses rather than into menswear.

None of that is a criticism. A brand is allowed to know exactly who it serves, and serving one audience properly is usually why a brand becomes recognisable in the first place. It simply means that a man searching for Hey Harper is searching for a promise, waterproof gold that behaves, rather than for a specific piece he can actually buy there.

What men are usually looking for

In practice the request behind the search is narrow and consistent: a chain that can be worn every day without a routine. Cuban links in the 4mm to 8mm range, a tennis chain for evenings, a signet or a band, a bracelet that survives the gym. Those are the shapes to look for elsewhere.

Section 03

What waterproof actually means

4mm cuban chain in gold, the everyday width most men are actually searching for

This is the part worth understanding, because it applies to every brand in the category, ours included, and it is what separates a claim from a specification.

Waterproof jewellery in this price bracket almost always means the same construction: a stainless steel core with a gold-coloured layer bonded on top. Water is rarely the real enemy. What decides how long a piece keeps its colour is the process used to apply that layer, its thickness, and the base metal underneath.

What to look for Why it matters
Steel grade 316L is the corrosion-resistant grade used for watch cases and surgical tools. Unspecified stainless steel can mean several different alloys.
Process PVD bonds in a vacuum and outlasts standard electroplating. Both can look identical in photographs on day one.
Thickness in microns The single number that predicts how long the colour lasts. Rarely published anywhere in the category.
Written guarantee Read what it covers: manufacturing faults, colour, or normal wear. The three are very different promises.

Held against that list, Hey Harper publishes the process, PVD, and a colour warranty, which already puts them ahead of most of the category. What we could not find published is the steel grade, the karat of the gold layer or a thickness in microns. That is a statement about what appears on their pages, not a judgement on how their pieces perform.

For the record, and so you can hold us to the same standard: our own pieces are made from premium 316L stainless steel with 18K gold PVD plating at a declared 1 to 2 microns, backed by a written 12-month guarantee against tarnishing. Those numbers are on every product page precisely so they can be compared.

Section 04

Where men in Portugal can look

gold tennis chain, the evening shape men search for alongside cuban links

Four options that between them cover most of what the Hey Harper search is really asking for. Each has a genuine limit, and each limit is stated.

Monrich, for cuban and tennis chains with published numbers

Ours, so weigh it accordingly. The range is built around exactly the shapes missing from the search results above: cuban links from 4mm to 8mm, tennis chains, signet rings and ID bracelets, all in 316L with 18K gold PVD at a declared thickness, all covered by a written 12-month guarantee, with a permanent two-for-one across the catalogue. Chains sit at roughly 50 to 160 euros. The honest limits: no silver line, no solid gold, and a deliberately small catalogue, so if you want a specific unusual width you may not find it with us. Start with the cuban chain range or the tennis chains.

Twobrothers, the Portuguese one

Based in Fânzeres, in the Gondomar area, and the closest thing to a local answer. They state 316L on their product pages, the pieces are described as waterproof and hypoallergenic, and their aftercare is genuinely strong: 60-day returns and a lifetime guarantee on structural defects and abnormal oxidation, on top of the three-year legal guarantee. That is more generous than ours on its own terms, and worth saying plainly. The catch for this particular search: a full pass through their catalogue turns up no cuban chain and no tennis chain, so if that is the shape you want, they are not the address.

Trendhim, for breadth

The Danish accessories retailer ships to Portugal and carries thousands of references, including its own Lucleon label. If you want to see many options side by side, nothing here beats it, and their returns window is unusually long. The trade-off is the same one that runs through this guide: the finish on the gold-coloured pieces is not described by process or thickness, and their warranty covers manufacturing faults rather than the wear of a coating.

Eugénio Campos, for precious metal

A Portuguese name for anyone who would rather step out of coated steel entirely, with a real men's range in silver and gold. Different category, different budget, and a different care routine, since silver tarnishes and wants polishing. Mentioned because for some readers it is the right answer.

Section 05

How to choose

Four questions settle it faster than any comparison table.

Do you want a shape or a promise? If you specifically want waterproof gold that behaves, several brands deliver it. If you want a cuban or a tennis chain in that finish, that narrows the field considerably, and it is the reason this article exists.

What does the page actually declare? Steel grade, process, microns, and what the guarantee covers. A brand that publishes all four is making a promise you can measure. A brand that publishes none is asking for trust instead.

Coated steel or precious metal? Coated steel is low maintenance and replaceable. Silver and gold hold value and tarnish or scratch differently, and they want care. Neither is better in the abstract.

Where do returns go? Inside the EU nothing is held at customs and a return is a domestic-feeling errand. From outside, add import charges and a longer round trip. Check the length of the returns window too, since it varies far more than people expect.

Whatever you pick, the useful habit is the same: read the specification before the photograph. The photograph looks identical across every brand in this category on day one. The specification is what tells you about month six.

Frequently asked questions

Does Hey Harper have a men's collection?

Not that we could find at the time of writing. Their men's collection URL returns a 404 and their sitemap contains no collection or product address using men, him or unisex. The catalogue is built for a female audience, which is a positioning choice rather than a shortcoming.

Can a man wear Hey Harper pieces anyway?

Of course, and plenty do. Jewellery has no rules of that kind. The practical issue is shape and scale rather than permission: the range is designed around finer proportions, so the wider cuban and tennis chains many men are looking for are not part of it.

Is Hey Harper jewellery really waterproof?

They publish a PVD coating over stainless steel and a lifetime colour warranty, which is a stronger position than most of the category takes. What is not published, on the pages we checked, is the steel grade, the karat of the gold layer or the thickness in microns, which are the numbers that predict how long a coating keeps its colour.

What is the best alternative for men in Portugal?

It depends on the shape. For cuban and tennis chains with a declared specification, our own range is built for exactly that. For a local Portuguese brand with excellent aftercare, Twobrothers, provided you do not need a cuban or tennis chain, since they do not carry them. For the widest choice, Trendhim. For silver and gold, Eugénio Campos.

Does buying from another EU country cost more?

Not in customs terms. Orders that travel within the European Union are not held for import duty, so the price you see is the price you pay, and a return stays inside the same system. Orders arriving from outside the EU can attract import VAT and handling fees, which is worth checking before ordering.
