How Much Does a Cuban Chain Cost

Ask what a cuban chain costs and you will get answers from £25 to £25,000, all technically correct. The style is identical; the construction is everything.

This guide breaks UK cuban chain pricing into its real tiers, explains what actually moves the price inside each tier, and flags where the value concentrates. Prices are typical UK retail bands at the time of writing; always check live pages for current numbers.

I run Monrich, a UK men's jewellery brand that sells cubans in one of these tiers, declared openly below. Current pieces and prices are on the cuban chains collection.

Section 01

The five price tiers

Plating macro: the difference between tiers lives at this scale

£20 to £50: standard electroplated

Flash-plated brass or steel. Looks right in photos, plating typically thins within months of daily wear. Fine for occasional styling, poor value for an everyday chain.

£40 to £110: PVD-plated 316L steel

Vapour-deposited plating measured in microns over marine-grade steel. Waterproof daily wear, years of life when the thickness is declared (look for 1 micron plus). This is where Monrich sits, with a 12-month written tarnish guarantee.

£80 to £350: sterling silver

Hallmarkable precious metal. White look only unless vermeil (see next tier). Weight rises fast with width, and silver cubans above 8mm get expensive quickly.

£150 to £600: gold vermeil

Thick gold over sterling silver. Precious base, gold look, still a coating: thickness and care determine lifespan.

£500 to £25,000 plus: solid gold

Price scales almost linearly with weight. A modest 3mm solid 9K cuban starts around the mid hundreds; a heavy 12mm 18K piece is a five-figure object. You are buying metal first, jewellery second.

Section 02

What moves the price inside a tier

Iced cuban: stones and setting labour on top of the base construction

Two chains in the same tier can differ by 3x. Four levers explain it.

Width. The big one. Material scales with width squared, roughly: an 8mm cuban carries several times the material of a 3mm. Every tier gets steep above 8mm.

Length. Linear but real: a 24 inch chain uses about 20 percent more material than a 20 inch.

Stones. Iced cubans (see the iced collection) add setting labour plus stone cost: CZ adds tens of pounds, moissanite hundreds, diamonds multiply everything.

Clasp and finishing. Box clasps with double safety catches, hand polishing and tighter link tolerances cost more than stamped closures. It is the first place cheap chains save money and the first thing that fails.

Section 03

Where the value sits in 2027

What arrives in the box matters less than what the spec sheet declared

Honest answer by use case.

Daily wear, gold look, real budget: PVD-plated 316L is the engineering sweet spot. You get the look, shower-proof durability and replaceable pricing. Spend £40 to £110, insist on declared microns.

Precious metal on a budget: sterling silver cubans in 3 to 5mm widths (compare against plain chain pricing), ideally rhodium plated against tarnish.

Heirloom or asset: solid gold, hallmarked, from a jeweller who weighs it in front of you. Nothing else is an investment; coatings and even silver are consumables at asset timescales.

The trap to skip: paying vermeil prices for undeclared electroplating. If a brand will not state the process and thickness, price it as the £20 tier regardless of the tag.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a decent cuban chain UK?

For daily wear, £40 to £110 buys a PVD-plated 316L cuban with declared thickness and a guarantee. Sterling silver starts around £80. Solid gold starts in the mid hundreds and climbs with weight.

Why are some cuban chains so cheap?

Sub-£30 chains are typically flash-plated brass or steel with microscopic plating that wears through in weeks to months of daily wear.

Is a solid gold cuban worth it?

As jewellery plus asset, yes if hallmarked and priced close to metal value. As a daily-wear style purchase, PVD steel gives the same look for 2 percent of the price.

Do iced cuban chains cost more?

Yes. CZ icing adds setting labour and modest stone cost; moissanite and diamonds raise prices by hundreds to thousands.

How much should an 8mm cuban cost?

Roughly: £60 to £110 in PVD 316L, £250 plus in sterling silver, £3,000 plus in solid gold depending on length and carat. Width is the main price lever.
